I like this book a lot. As I was finishing the last page, I noticed I had a huge smile on my face. Needless to say, I was happy with the way the book ended. I love a satisfying read, and I thought The Lumberjacks' Ball was indeed that!
It was a lot of fun getting to know Garrett, the elder Christy brother. He was a secondary character in the first book of the series, The Fruitcake Challenge, where he was known for his size and strength. In this story, we get to see a sweet and gentle side of this giant hero. Rebecca Hart is a reluctant heroine, with a secret past. She prefers to blend into the background, but that is difficult to do, as the proprietress of the mercantile. It is interesting to see how these two work through their problems and the expectations of their parents, as they hesitantly follow God's leading. I especially like the way that Rebecca was helped to recognize her God-given talents and strengths, which is such an important part of life, and a gift that is sometimes overlooked.
The Lumberjacks' Ball has much to offer the reader--intrigue, mystery and suspense, along with romance and a beautiful setting in St. Ignace and Mackinac, Island, Michigan in 1891--the heyday of lumbering the white pines. Characters of French and Scandinavian origins add color and interest to the story.
I recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical fiction in 19th century North America. It will especially appeal to those who like interesting and well-researched settings. The Lumberjacks' Ball can be read as a standalone novel, but I recommend reading the books in order, for the most enjoyment.
