Clarissa Cummings is a physician's assistant who has just lost her job. Despite all her efforts, her husband has become quarrelsome and distant during their few years of marriage and this latest bit of information isn't going to go over well. Her stress is magnified upon her early arrival home, only to find her husband in bed with her friend. Overcome with grief, she drives away and has an accident on the bridge over the Chesapeake-Delaware Canal. She finds herself being saved from drowning by a handsome Jack Martin in the year 1829. Jack, of noble English family, has fled to America after a scandal and found contentment in the simple farm life. He longs to make Clarissa his bride, but secrets of his past and her distrust in men appears to make the goal unattainable. I enjoy a good time-travel romance, and this one was particularily good. Clarissa is on outspoken woman of the 90's and has a difficult time adjusting to the demure expectations for women of the 19th century. Jack appears to be a true man of honor and his word, something desperately lacking in the 20th century. Clarissa soon finds herself more relaxed and content with the simplicities of farm life, although she is quite an impetuous snoop when digging for the truth. I enjoyed all the characters in this story who add realism and depth to the era. I could hardly wait to get to end of the book to find what secret Jack was trying desperately to keep/protect Clarissa from, plus Clarissa has a surprising secret of her own to hide. Excellent.

I Really enjoyed this story. The main Character Clarissa goes from 1993 back to 1823 and meets her true love, Jack. The author did a great job writing about the struggles of a modern woman in not so modern times. The story stayed interesting and was full of suspense, Love, Fear and Secrets. I couldn't wait to get to the end to hear what secrets Jack was keeping from Clarissa. Great Read. I couldn't put it down.

It was unrealistic and a little boring, but not unworthy of my time. I honestly did not like the leading characters and that is possibly why I did not thoroughly enjoy reading this book.
(Please forgive me I cannot remember the main characters names and I have already gotten rid of the book) Although [the mans] character is strong and gentle yet pressing he is far to ok with keeping secrets that are obviously tearing his relationship apart and often blames {her} for not blindly trusting a stranger, who she married for some odd reason. {She} comes off as kind of a cry baby, baldly implying that she had been sexually, emotionally and/or physically abused. Cheating is no easy thing to deal with by any means but with the way she acted was only a cry for attention. I also did not understand the preface of her losing her job before all of this junk happened, I think this book was the authors bad attempt at "when it rains it pours..."
There isn't a whole lot of warmth or sense of reason in this novel and it kind of left me wanting something else. It wasn't horrible but if I could fall in a river and go back in time I might leave myself a letter to not WASTE my time reading this book.
