A LADY SCORNED...A LOVE REVEALED...
When Lizzie Lancaster receives a letter from the man she's loved since childhood breaking off their understanding, she's heartsick. But when the dashing rogue goes on to reveal that he has fallen for a woman who is elegant and sophisticated-everything Lizzie is not-she is furious. How dare he dismiss her so easily? Determined to show him just how worldly she can be, Lizzie vows to transform herself from a country miss into a ravishing beauty...one who will soon have not only her errant fiance but every other gentleman - eligible or not - in her thrall.
Matthew Webster is appalled. The last thing he expected was to have Lizzie show up in Vienna...much more alluring-and provoking-than he recalled. When did the innocent maid turn into a captivating minx? And how is he to protect her when she seems intent on embarking on the most reckless escapades? It's enough to make even a serious, level-headed man want to shake her...or kiss her. Yet when danger flares and war looms Matthew begins to realize what Lizzie has been trying to tell him all along...that some loves are meant to be.

When Lizzie Lancaster was 15 years old, she was in love with a man she had known her whole life: Matthew Webster. When Matthew leaves for war, they have an understanding. Someday, Lizzie and Matthew will be married.
Three years later, Lizzie receives a heart-renching missive from her beau. Matthew is engaged to another woman--a Miss Teresa Blackwell! Lizzie is determined to show Matthew she is more worldly than he realizes. She decides to take matters into her own hands. With a friend, Lizzie travels to Vienna... where Matthew is.
The back of the book fails to mention the OTHER man who becomes a large part of Lizzie Lancaster's life. Daniel Thoreau, an American, becomes her traveling partner and fast friend.

I thought this would be a cute little romance, there was no romance. Oh, I take that back the last chapter the two characters finally had a conversation of more than 10 or 12 words. It took me about 6 weeks to read and it is a short, short book. I finally finished it thinking that it might get better, but no such luck! I've read other Mona Gedney books that contained whitty conversation and undercurrents of love, but this wasn't one of them.
