Admittedly, I had initially bought this book because I wanted to see the large number of underwater photographs and images, but the history within turned out to be a wonderful read. While I was almost appalled at myself for being so fascinated with the images of the wreckage of the ships that had sank and the lives lost, the historical information in itself is a riveting read. I found that I got through this book quicker than I thought (only a handful of nights reading in between other books) I would due to wonderful writing and a comfortable size print. :)

Some of the paintings that are captured in this book are so life-like that you actually have to search for the grain of the canvas under the paint to realize you're not looking at a photograph. Stunning is too tame a word to describe the work that was done.

I love Ballard's view of turning the Titanic's wreck into an underwater museum in order to preserve it's historical value while at the same time respecting it as the grave that it is.

Overall, this is a wonderful book. I've never read one on ships before, but I was really pleased that I had purchased this one to get at least some knowledge in the history of the ships' stories told in this book.
