Historical novel, taking place in 1830's New Hampshire. Great book, though quite violent. My book group loved it.

Opens in the year 1838, a man known only as Blood sets out to for the wild country of New Hampshire with an oxcart full of rum and a young girl named Sally. They both hope to start fresh with a second chance at life. Once there, they encounter many obstacles and violence and shed some light on their secrets of the past.

The book opens as Blood and the teenage prostitute Sally, who he won in a card game, travel to the back-est of back-woods in northern New Hampshire. So far north no one really knows if it's still America or if it's Canada.

Author Jeffrey Lent doesn't flinch from the nastier elements of Blood's character while slowly developing the bond of respect and eventually care that grows between him and Sally.

Gritty, realistic, passionate, stark, evocative, unflinching, this is Lent's masterpiece.

Jeffery Lent puts you into each skin, as it were, of every character. I found I could justify, empathize, sympathize and almost experience who these people were. From main characters to the background people. I've been transported back to this raw infant America and I can't get enough.

Jeffrey Lent expresses the human condition with an acute awareness. Having read three of his books, I only wish there were more. Highly recommended
