Twenty years ago a woman witnessed the brutal murder of a congressman. She was committed to an asylum by her father a powerful General. In the current day attorney Ami Vergano witnesses an act of violence at a Little League game that shakes her trust in the gentle man who has ben renting space over her garage and who she considered a friend. A mysterious woman appears and asks her to represent the man in court. Before long the man and woman have told Ami a bizarre story about a secret military unit that committed murder and was involved in drug smuggling. The woman has a history of psychological problems and there are no records to back up their story and the accusation that a candidate for president is behind it all. Soon Ami doesn't know who or what to believe. This is a thrill a minute part action story and part court room drama with a satisfying and surprising ending. A first rate read.

This book was the first book I've read by Philip Margolin and it was great! Great character development and enough twists and turns to keep you wondering if you really have it all figured out. The story moves fast and easily keeps you interested in the plot. You won't be sorry for trying this one!

This book is hot but aside from the attorney thing it's tough to give a review without giving any of the cliff hangers away.
Margolin is a master at creating characters that seem to be ripped from the headlines. A must read.
Good read.
Young, inexperienced Attorney Ami Vergano becomes embroiled in a wild conspiracy case that ends up in murder and she's forced to defend a man who is not who he said he is and has a dark past that he will not tell her about. She uses her wits and sharp mind to stumble through the first phases of the trial while waiting for a criminal attorney to come and take over the case. Interesting!!
I started this book, then lost interest
Great read! Interesting characters and twists and turns.
Margolin's books never disappoint!
i love philip margolin. this book was great. i could hardly put it down.

This is a very moving and strong suspense book been a long time since I have read such a strong book. I thouroughly recomend five stars. I got the book in a box of books and now know I have another author to read!!!
up all night to finish it a real page turner
twists and turns and thrills abound
This suspense novel is definitely not the author's best effort, but interesting characters and a military cover-up made this an easy and enjoyable read for me on a rainy afternoon.
I loved this book, kept me turning pages and had just enough twists and turns to keep you totally hooked like a book that has a lot of links to different situations and this one had it all.
Good characters, good plot
This book will keep you going the whole way through!! I'm working on reading all of Margolin's books after reading two!
complicated tale of murder and violence, as it unfolds keeps you wondering what is real and what is not
I generally look forward to Mr. Margolin's novels, but this one was not his best in my opinion. But I also don't like political thrillers and this turned out to be one.
Why did a calm man go crazy at a Little League baseball game?Is the man's high school sweatheart crazy or is her father?
Great read! I could not put this book down and I could not guess what would happen. Even the "good" characters are bad!
Good read as usual.
I didn't finish the book. I couldn't follow it.

Well crafted and it moves fast.
Another great thriller by Margolin......... I am hooked
Very good read, moved fast and you had to keep up!
Not typical of the type of book that I would like.... military thriller/mystery, however, I couldn't stop reading this one. Overall, very good and interesting story lines.
This is a good book. It is a little simple but good.
Well defined and interesting characters. The story line held together, but was very standard right-wing zealot/CIA/Vietnam conspiracy type stuff. Not quite as challenging to the reader as "After Dark" was, but still a good read.

Hard to put down. Plan on having time to read it straight through.
I really enjoyed this book as I have all of this author's writings.
This book was pretty suspenseful, but a slightly disappointing ending.
great read- many twists
The beginning is a little slow but it picks up and becomes a masterful story.
I just finished reading it. It's a fast read, at least it was for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the book but then again, I like most of Philip Margolin's novels. The story is a tad farfetched but it's good anyway.
strong plot line. highly recommended
This truly a page-turner, very very well written you won't put it down!
Just couldn't get into this story for some reason, it appears well written, good characters and moved along well, just not my style.
