Sarah Ash has a unique style where Russian fairy tales meet Dracula. While I feel that her world is rich, I felt that her characters were stereotypical, angsty, and gothic--just the type that I would have liked when I was a teenager.

As an adult reader, I didn't find much fulfillment from these books. I found them to be too simplistic in the political arena, and overly dramatic in the character development. If you love melodrama, romance, and high fantasy, you'll probably like this series. If you prefer subtlty in your fantasy and complex politics, you may want to look elsewhere.

I like this book and thought it was an interesting and unconventional type of fantasy.

Pretty good book, although not among the "greats."

It was intriguing, and frequently enthralling, if a bit awkward in spots. I liked it well enough to keep it and buy the other two.

An excellent start to The Tears of Artamon trilogy. An unusual hero, a romantic portrait painter from the warm southern lands finds himself kidnapped and dragged to the far north to a land of ice and snow. He is heir to the kingdom and his subjects aren't taking no for an answer. Reluctant doesn't begin to describe Gavril's feelings about ruling this harsh and joyless land, all the more so when he becomes aware of the dark and terrible power he is expected to wield to keep the land and its people "safe."

I don't want to give too much away, but the character development is well done and the layers of intrigue add the right amount of spice to the tale. Well worth the read! I look eagerly forward to book two.

This was a pretty strange mix of vampire novel and fantasy. Not particularly well-written, but good for an airplane ride or a beach vacation.

Raised by his protective mother, Gavril Andar knows nothing of his father, or of the ominous legacy that awaits him. But now the man who ruled the wintry kingdom of Azhkendir, a man infused with the burning blood of the dragon-warrior known as Drakhaoul, has been murdered.
Gavril must avenge his father's death, and learns that becoming Drakhaon means not only ascending to the throne, but slowly changing into a being of extraordinary power and might. A being that must be replenished with the blood of the innocents in order to survive.

This book is a highly complex saga full of magic and intrigue. Sarah Ash is a newcomer to the world of fantasy, but her trilogy has been well received.

My son says this is excellent. He gave it to me to post because he bought another one to re-read before reading part 2 & 3 - he told me to post this one!
