Damien Knight, Earl of Winterley, gives a whole new meaning to being a tortured soul and a wounded hero. While Lucien is a naughty boy, Damien is aloof, reserved and honor-bound. He is a respectable war veteran, a hero in every sense of the word. But few people know about his inner torment centered on mental flashbacks of the war. He thinks he is losing his mind and decides to isolate himself from his friends and family. However, things change when a fellow soldier is killed and Damien becomes the victim's niece's ward. He thought Miranda FitzHubert was a little girl, and he had not expected a sensual raven-haired beauty of marriageable age. Even though they experience a mutual attraction, Damien keeps his distance and decides to introduce her to the ton and monitor her suitors. He doesn't want Miranda to witness his dark torment as he slowly loses touch with reality, but Miranda is determined to help him get through his pain and win his heart in the process. There are various twists throughout the novel.

I loved this book! It's the classic guardian/ward story but written so well that there was no yuck factor. Miranda was a strong character, she was exactly what Damien needed. And the ending was just perfect. I highly recommend this book!

Other family members make a welcome appearance.

The fiery Miranda meets the seemingly cold Damien by chance before they are thrown together by events neither can control. Their developing relationship will leave you frustrated and breathless all at once. Foley is superb at leading you through twists and turns unexpectedly, making the book impossible to put down. You'll fall in love with the two people who can't seem to fall in love with each other. A true page turner and must read!!!
