Cortes sailed from Cuba with a force of between 600 and 700 men, landing on the Mexican coast in 1519. Montezuma was emperor of the country and resided in the city of Mexico. Thither Cortes marched with most of his force, having left the remainder settled at Vera Cruz. On the march he defeated and won over some of the native tribes, creating a great effect by his guns and his few horsemen. The Spaniards were well received by Montezuma, but after a time their position became one of great danger. Cortes, with his small troop, had the daring to seize Montezuma, and compel him to cede his empire. The city rose, and Montezuma, while endeavouring to pacify the mob, was struck by a stone and died from the effects. Cortes had to evacuate the city, but later returned with reinforcements, laid great part of it in ruins, and finally subjugated the country. 6. who strangled Atahualpa. Francisco Pizarro, when he conquered Peru. Atahualpa had deprived his half-brother Huascar of the kingship of Peru. The royal family were known as the Incas, but Atahualpa himself was not pure-blooded. Pizarro arrived (1532) at Atahualpa's camp with a band of only some two hundred followers. The king came to visit him in a friendly spirit, but Pizarro, having made his arrangements, cut down the body-guard and seized his person. As in Mexico, the Spaniard's horsemen and guns proved completely effective, and the Peruvians were massacred in numbers. A large ransom was paid, but Pizarro, instead of releasing Atahualpa, accused him of plotting, tried him and condemned him to be burned. ...« less
