A very intense tale centered around the question of illegitimacy. The heroine and her brother are the illegitimate children of a duke. So they are neither fish nor fowl. They won't be accepted by the upper class and they don't really belong with middle class people either. It seems like there is no future for the heroine except that of a mistress. But having lived that life through her mother she doesn't want that. The hero's family also has illegitimacy in it. These two are strongly attracted to each other but marriage is out of the question. Events cause the hero to rethink his views. My only caveat is that some characters just vanish from the tale; I must check whether the author picked up their fate in a subsequent book.
Sexual content: There's quite a bit, but nothing that grossed me out.

This is a great book. Do not judge the hero too harshly early on. He is a keeper. It just takes many pages to get there.
