A great study of poverty in the Victorian Period written by Henry Mayhew who gathered his information from the street people in the 1840s and 1850s. An exceptionally interesting sociological study, as well as a good background for Dickens books. This is the first of four volumes and contains accounts from the criminal class: pickpockets, vagrants, rag-pickers, prostitutes, robbers and other desperate folk. Wonderful and appalling read.
