Annotation
When her family moves to a new neighborhood, Heather meets ten-year-old Lizzie Logan, whose brash and bossy ways make Heather wonder if they can ever be friends.

From The Critics
Publishers Weekly
Lizzie makes her first appearance in this chronicle of an on-again, off-again friendship between two very different girls. Since her adventures with colored eyewear, she has headlined in two sequels: Lizzie Logan Gets Married and Lizzie Logan, Second Banana. Ages 7-10. (Jan.)

Children's Literature
When eight-year-old Heather Wade moves onto Mole Street in June, she is little prepared to deal with ten-year-old Lizzie Logan. Lizzie plunks herself in front of Heather as her family is moving in and promptly announces that she hates the name "Heather." Lizzie drags her new-found friend along on her "butt hunting" excursions (for cigarette butts that she "smokes" without lighting), convinces Heather that spider plants eat people, and tells Sarah, Heather's best friend from her old neighborhood, that she is fat. Despite Lizzie's crude manners and cruel temperament, Heather learns to appreciate this unpredictable friendship. By the end of the novel, the two girls are confirmed best friends. While many mothers would discourage their children from befriending kids like Lizzie, Heather's mom sees through Lizzie's pretense and helps Heather understand how much Lizzie needs her steady levelheaded friendship. An easy and enjoyable read.

Nicely paced...Spinelli's sympathy for these girls lifts the characterization above the level that's usually found in easy chapter books.
...very funny...entertaining story...looks like a hit.

Great for kids. Teaches kids to look past people's outward behavior to see the person inside while giving a great story any kid would love.
