There is so much to admire about this book. Through graphic illustrations, the author showed the difference between today's Norway and what it looked like during the Viking era. The author also clarified different terms:
- A Viking went on expeditions,
- When they stayed home and tended their farms, they were called Scandinavians.
- When they moved, settling in foreign lands, they were called Norsemen.
The author showed the lives of Norse children and what they did to help their families, and how they had fun. Also, in the name of building alliances, sons exchanged homes with allies (to forge strong bonds), and daughters were married to ally's sons (without the girl's input).
This book also gave information about some of the most important Norse gods. Then, the author gave thumbnail sketches of important Vikings. I learned that Rollo was the first ruler of Normandy, and his descendant, William the Conqueror, invaded England in 1066.
At the end of the book, there is a glossary with lots of terms that might be unknown to readers. My only complaint is the tiny print used throughout this book. As a result, it isn't easy to read. Otherwise, this is a great addition to any library.
