He escaped military detention only to be captured by Philippine Insurgents fighting the Americans. They offered him a choice: commission in their army or fed to wild pigs. He was instrumental in saving the lives of other captured American soldiers. When recaptured by U.S. Soldiers a treason offence was added and he was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging. However, extenuating circumstances and intervention by his commanding officer saved him. He was incarcerated on Alcatraz Island, then a military prison, to await a review of his case. On November 16, 1901, two weeks after his arrival on the Island, he swam away on a plank to the Oakland shore seven miles away. He never knew that two years after his escape President Theodore Roosevelt signed a pardon for his treason conviction.« less
