Little Audrey is a moving and evocative portrait of a child's life growing up in a coal camp in post-war rural Virginia.

The novel is based on the author's childhood and is narrated in the voice of her older sister, Audrey, who expresses the heartbreaking longing for security and stability in a household lacking in both, with a severely depressed mother and an alcoholic father. Dialogue perfectly captures the unique local dialect, and period details and local flavor are sprinkled throughout.

It is a lovely little book for younger readers, but also an enjoyable read for adults.
