This novel is a wild ride ... especially if you live in Iowa, Nebraska, or Colorado where the story is set! In contemporary times, US citizens are becoming ill, exhibiting very erratic behavior leading to early-onset dementia and then death. At the same time, a young woman is expelled from a religious cult where's she's lived, separated from the real world, since she was 5 years old.

The novel interweaves the current timeline, where the US power grid has gone down and chaos sweeps across the country, with flashbacks, showing life within the walled cult community, until the storylines merge. It was incredibly suspenseful to read this thriller which features actual locations across the state where I live! Tosca Lee's writing is intense and smart with welcome bits of pop-culture humor added at just the right moments.

This book has a reasonable conclusion, but the story continues in book 2 "A Single Light."
