A really good read. Susan Wiggs does it again. Loneliness and self imposed exile are the setting for this book. The lightkeeper is widowed and mans the lighthouse as a penace. He finds a beautiful pregnant womam washed up along the dangerous cliffs. After taking everything from him, will the sea give back?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from Susan Wiggs. I have always loved lighthouses and loved that the story took place near the lighthouse. It was a great book about relationships between friends and family and seeing loyalty with friends who sees the good in somebody eventhough their lives seem to be a closed book.

I love Susan Wiggs another good book!
Wiggs is a VERY fine writer. I will always take the time to read her wonderful novels.
Unfortunately, I recently read Mary Burtons THE LIGHTKEEPERS WOMAN and these two books are amazingly alike. Since the lighthouse keeper isnt going anywhere, the story has to come to him.
Jesse Morgan has been hiding from life for the past 12 years. He, one of the beautiful people of Portland, had a wonderful wife, who had just announced that they were going to have a child. They were lost at a dangerous water crossing because the lightkeeper was involved in a poker game and forgot his job.
Now Jesse is a lightkeeper in a remote area in the Pacific Northwest. He keeps to himself and broods over his loss. One day, he rescues a woman from the dangerous waters. When he realizes she is pregnant, he is twice as upset. None of Jesses helpers will take this lost woman from him; he is told that the woman is his destiny.
He rants and rages against this tiny woman who has yet to waken. When she does, Mary Dare increases his emotional turmoil. She is a real Pollyanna; she sees the bright side of everything. The comparison between Jesses black grief and Marys supreme cheerfulness began to grate after awhile.
This is a really well-written book; its just that the topic has already been covered. In the later chapters, I did a few eye rolls over some of the dialog and/or scenes. Of course, the villain was as black as sin with no redeeming qualities.

A really compelling story with a great ending.
This was a tremendous read, a story one can really get into.
Once, the sea took everything he loved...
Jesse Morgan is a man hiding from the pain of his past, a man who has vowed never to give his heart again. Keeper of a remote lighthouse along a rocky and dangerous coast, he has locked himself away from everything but his bitter memories.
Now the sea has given him a second chance.
A beautiful stranger washes ashore, the sole survivor of a shipwreck. Penniless and pregnant, Dary Dare is a woman who carries painful memories of her own.
With laughter, hope and joy, Mary and her child bring light into the dark corners of Jesse's world. Soon friendship turns to passion and passion becomes love. And together they must fight the secrets from the past that threaten to destroy all they hold dear.

I loved this book!
The keeper of a remote lighthouse is given a second chance at life when a beautiful stranger washes ashore from a shipwreck
I love historical romances and this is no exception. It was a great book. These two characters needed each other and fate brought them together. Mary wouldn't give up on Jesse; she had a lot of patience for his temper and the fact that he took so long to open his heart to her.

I have had this book in my collection for years, and have read it several times. Then what happens, my mom buys the reissue and gives it to me when she is done. So I am keeping my old copy, and posting the new one.
Think I was hooked from the lines "In the early years, after the tragedy had first happened, he had clung to the books like a lifeline. The babbling voices of fictional characters had blocked out the howl of emptiness that screamed through his mind."
