I couldn't put this book down, the Fenwick Lighthouse is about 4 miles from my home, it gave me a view of what it could have been like to live during the Civil War. I recommend this book to young girls and boys.

This is the lovely and well written book of a young girl's diary as she tends the lighthouse, which is also her home, during the Civil War. She is violently against the keeping of slaves which alienates her from her mother and grandmother , to a certain extent. During those times, girls were not to question their parents and she does so , courageously, but it seldom gets her the answers she needs from either parent. She tends the lighthouse, which is an adult's job, and ultimately gets paid for it. She has a sweetheart , who joins the War, and it is a sweet story. I enjoyed it very much.

What a beautiful book! My 4th grader didn't undestand a lot of the the big words and larger concepts (they wrote differently during that time period). But I found it very interesting myself! I learned so much in reading it about the life of a woman during that period and what it was like to live in a lighthouse. I enjoyed reading about how strong of a woman she was and taking on duties unlike no other woman would usually be allowed to do by a man. What a strong story!
