This story is about the murder of an unknown woman and found by Della, the new owner of Cogburn's Store. However, the real story is about the evolution of a youngster named Abit. He's the only child of the couple that used to own the store. His parents know that Abit is slow (learning disabled), so they removed him from school when he was twelve.

Abit has been vegetating in front of the store. He has the same chair he's been sitting in for years. His parents do not allow him to enter the store (to irritate the owner). Abit is now almost sixteen. However, Della does not look at Abit as a helpless creature. That is the beauty of this story. The author tells the simple story of personal growth in the Appalachian Mountains.

Although the story is low-key, it packs a punch. The characters are relatable, and I didn't want to set the book aside. The explanation of the title, "A Life for a Life," is profound. This is a little treasure. Overall score = E.
