I have this book but am not posting it because I don't want it to get away! :) Very good book - any member of this club ought to be able to appreciate the joy of the author who started school to learn to read at the age of 98.

I read this book about 5 years ago after hearing an interview with the subject. The book is delightful. It is simply written and celebrates George Dawson very modestly. he had so little but achieved a great sense of purpose and satisfaction throughout his life.
Very uplifting (now if I can only find my copy I could re-read the book!).

Reading about anyone's life would be amazing, but this man's attitude should make it required reading. it tells about one person's struggle, but also about life in general in those times. It also tells you the value one places on an education, which was not possible for him earlier. all heroes are not football players, they are everyday people who live their lives out as well as they can. A wonderful book, i enjoyed it immensely.
One of the most optimistic & inspiring stories I have ever read!
Read this for my book club and was delighted with it. A wonderful book that gives insight into our history in a delightful way.
I loved this story! A nice, inspirational read.
the narrator of this memoir is a really sweet elderly man, but i wouldn't give it 5 stars.
A remarkable book. The autobiography of a 103 year old slave's grandson who learned to read at age 98. Such a positive outlook on life, and what a life! Read it. You'll be glad you did.
Life really is so good! Great book.
I came away from this book very much admiring George Dawson. His character, work ethic and attitude about life is inspirational. Full of some wonderful insights, this book and George Dawson left an imprint on me. Great true life read that I think many young people would benefit from reading, too.
I'm in the process of reading this book now...its a slow go and gives lots of background. Has even been kinda sad. its just about his life and growing up black and in slavery. lots of history and lots of wisdom to glean
Interesting story from a great perspective. Unbelievable how historical facts reek of racism.
I ENJOYED THE BOOK.
