My favorite Ken Follett...excellent...a must read.

Follett's new thriller (after Eye of the Needle, The Key to Rebecca) involves cut-throat treachery and mixed-up romances. Jane and Ellis, Americans in Paris, are lovers, but she breaks with him when she learns he's a CIA agent, informing on terrorists. Ellis goes back to the U.S.; Jane marries Jean-Pierre Debout, a French physician, and goes with him to Afghanistan to care for rebel families holding out against the Russian army. Here is where the novel's real action, and its knife-edge tension, begin. After the birth of her baby, Jane discovers that Jean-Pierre is himself spying for the Russians and has caused a massacre of guerrilla fighters who were trapped at the foot of the mountains. Then Ellis reappears, bearing offers of American aid for Afghan leader Masud if the latter can unite his country's quarreling tribes. While Jean-Pierre is conspiring with the S oviet intruders to kill Masud, Ellis, Jane and even the infant girl, the story races to an explosive climax.

I'm not a huge Ken Follet fan but this was a pretty good book. The description of Afghanistan and life there was very interesting in lite of current events.

Solid Follett. Though fiction, it holds up well after reading historical accounts of the Russian/Afghan war.
A fulfilling rendition of guerilla fighting in Afghanistan, appealing central characters.
An Excellent Spy Thriller from one of the best in the genre. Also a good romance. I highly recommend.
Typical Ken Foliett suspense, action and drama involving the first Afghanistan conflict.
Good read. A little drawn out but stil held my interest
This book allows us to live in Afghanistan during the years prior to American involvement. A good story, a wonderful and disturbing sense of place.
A well written portrayal of the actions of the CIA in supporting the Afghan rebellion in the 90's and, more importantly, the mindset that gave rise to that support.
Lie Down with Lions contains an excellent plot, employing an array of techniques that keeps the readers interest right from the start. From the beginning, the book is filled with scenes of passion, deceit, treachery, and action. These characteristics are all coupled together making for a page turner from start to finish.
I enjoy his books. This is one of the god ones.
Another Follett great! Exciting beginning to end.
It's one of his earlier works and it was pretty enjoyable
Ellis, the American. Jean-Pierre, the Frenchman. Jane, the beautiful, sensual Englishwoman whom they both loved and who loved both of them. Two men of opposite sides of the cold war--and the woman torn between them...in a triangle of passion and deception that moved from terrorist bombs in Paris to the violence and intrigue of Afghanistan...to the moment of naked truth and deadly decision for all of them.
A great romantic adventure and twisting suspense at their greatest. Great ending. Deadly romantic triangle. Enjoy! Moisture marks on lower corner on first 3 pages.
"A deadly romaniic triangle,,,A plot gripping and ingenious as Eye of the Needle."
I really enjoy Mr. Follett.
I really enjoy Mr. Follett.
I think that this book was one of Follett's best. I may read again if I have time before someone requests it. It's been a while.
Jane Lambert discovers that her French doctor husband is really a KGB agent plotting to entrap a rebel leader. Ellis Thaler, spurned by Jane when she learned he was a CIA operative, arrives {in Afghanistan} to conclude a treaty with that same leader. Soon Ellis, Jane, and her infant daughter are fleeing for their lives through treacherous mountain terrain, closely pursued by Russian patrols
Good action, suspense, etc.
GREAT STORY
About two men on opposite sides of the cold war and the woman torn between them. The book moves from terrorist bombs in Paris to violence and intrigue of Afghanistan. It's tense, vivid and exciting.
Ellis, the American. Jean-Pierre, the Frenchman. 2 men opposite sides, a woman torn between them. A deadly romantic triangle, a mission with global stakes. The Russians want to assassinate Masud, leader of the Afghan guerrilla force. A gripping, masterful plot which keeps you on the edge of your seat. Audio narration was excellent. Intriguing characters. Itâs a love story and a struggle for freedom. Recommended.
didn't like so didn't read
Very good account of why we are in Afganistaan right now.
excellent book, about a little known era in the history of a war in eurasia.
Ken Follett is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. "Lie Down With Lions" was interesting and realistic. The love triangle completes an already intriguing plot filled with war and heartache. I appreciate the amount of research the writer must've had to do to accurately describe the terrain, seasons, and hardships of traversing Afghanistan. This is the third Ken Follett book I've read, and I'm going to keep on until I've read them all! Fantastic!
