Although originally published in 1965, this book does not show its age. In addition to teaching proper care of pet turtles, it tells a story about the responsibility one takes on with a new pet. The boys find that taking care of a pet includes finding out when you don't know what to do. When their turtles aren't happy, the boys solve the problems with their pets' environments by experimenting, asking adults, and asking experts. They also share everything they learn with each other. Their approach to their turtle problems shows both curiosity and a sense of responsibility. All pets should be as well cared-for as the turtles in this book.
