I am a huge fan of the orginal, I read it every couple of years. I picked up this version by accident, not realizing it was an adaptation. If you have never read the orginal then this is a great book that tells the basic story. But I truely missed the orginal language and cadence of Hugo. Now that you know the basics, please take the time and dive head first into Hugo's world of splendid visions. There is truely nothing like it, and you will not be disappointed.

I LOVE this book.
The story is amazing! The characters are varied and colorful, the plot twists are realistic yet surprising, and the over-all moral of the story is very true to life.

Bit of Advice:
Get an abridged version. Hugo was always a little TOO wordy. People concidered his books a little tedious even in his time. Abridged versions don't ruin the story in this case.

It is abridged but it has all the important parts. If you've seen the musical and want to know more this is the book you want.

I loved this story. The unabridged version (about 1,200 pages) has more soul than this shorter version, but the abridged version is still worth reading. The story is packed with profound statements and deep meaning, so don't read too fast or you will miss something. This is one of those classic stories everyone should read at some time in their life.

I have read, literally, thousands of books, and this is #1 on my all-time list. A friend of mine reads it every December and has been doing so for about 20 years.

Enjoyable read. We read this aloud as a group--lent itself well to that format. Good abridgement.

This is the large size book with nice updated cover and pages that look like an old book would. NICE!

One of my all-time favorite novels. Set during the French Revolution, this story of impoverishment and despair speaks to me on so many levels. Love, loyalty, patriotism, all come together in this rousing tale. I love it.

Absolutely wonderful. This story is so imaginative and captivating. I have not seen the movie or play so reading this for a library contest was at first something I thought I would dread, it was wonderful, I just cannot say enough about the surprise I encountered when I finished this book and was left wanting more. In my opinion a must read.

Although this book is an abridgement, it is still 400 pages long. It was translated from French.
