One of the world’s foremost experts on oil, gas, and energy, Leonardo Maugeri is Senior Executive Vice President (Director) of Strategies and Development at eni SpA, one of the leading international oil & gas companies. In this position, he is also responsible for the company’s research and technology policy.

Born in Florence, Italy, in 1964, Mr. Maugeri holds two degrees (Political Science and Economics) and a Ph.D. in international economics. During his Ph.D. research, he specialized in energy economics in Great Britain and the United States, where he lived and worked as an energy financial analyst for two years.

He joined eni in 1994, and served as assistant to the Chief Executive Officer from 1995 to 1998. From 1999 to 2000 he was responsible for Strategic Studies and International Relations. In 2000, at the age of 36, he was appointed as head of Strategies and Development, becoming the youngest Director (and Senior Vice President) of eni in 30 years.

In his career at eni, he was keys in several moments of the company’s life. In particular, he was one of the key architect of the strategy of aggressive growth of eni launched in 1999. Likewise, he was the main architect of the new policy of research and technology launched in 2006, which opened up eni’s entry into renewable energy. In this framework, Maugeri promoted the strategic alliance between eni and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).In march 2010 Mr. Maugeri was nominated Chairman of Polimeri Europa, a petrochemical company wholly owned and controlled by eni. Polimeri Europa manages the production and marketing of a wide portfolio of petrochemical products, having the possibility to use a range of proprietary technologies and state-of-the-art production systems, a wide-reaching and efficient distribution network.

Mr. Maugeri was among the few who warned about a probable crash of oil prices after the sky-high levels achieved in 2008. He has published four books on energy, among them the “The Age of Oil: the Mythology, History, and Future of the World’s Most Controversial Resource” (Praeger, 2006). His latest book — “Beyond the Age of Oil: The Myths, Realities, and Future of Fossil Fuels and Their Alternatives” will be published in the U.S. in early 2010.

Mr. Maugeri has also written several articles which appeared in Foreign Affairs, Science, Newsweek International, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, the Oil & Gas Journal and Scientific American. He is a columnist for the Italian financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.

Mr. Maugeri is a Visiting Scholar of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a member of MIT’s External Energy Advisory Board. He also serves as an International Councilor of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington, D.C.), as a member of the Global Energy Advisory Board of Accenture, and he is a senior fellow of the Foreign Policy Association (New York).

Mr. Maugeri is a member of the board of directors of Polimeri Europa SpA (an eni subsidiary in the petrochemical industry), Italgas and the Mattei Foundation. He is also a director of the board of the Fondazione Politecnico di Milano.
