It is highly unlikely that you will ever again see Jacob and his household as vague, dusty characters wandering about in the book of Genesis. This author, has, through the weak eyes of Leah, skillfully depicted powerful, God-fearing Jacob and his single-minded love for beautiful Rachel. We grieve for the older sister as she discovers that the bearing of sons cannot bring about her fondest dream. This plain, splendid woman, however, teaches us that there is a beauty in integrity exceeding that of a fair face. We find them all, in the end, so very like ourselves, filled with tender loves, ugly jealousies, wavering loyalties, and deep hungerings for an assurance of God's acceptance. This fascinating saga will bring you a renewed awareness that while settings and cultures change, people don't. Our struggle with sorrow and sin remains constant, and our mutual hope lies only in the One who knows our individual pain and offers healing.-June Strong
