This is an absolutely heartbreaking tale of poor, working girl who fights her way to the upper echelons of society. You will feel for this character in every step of her journey and weep with her at every step she falls back. Recommended for those who enjoy societal stories.

This is a richly romantic tale...set against the glittering Boston of the 1880's and the opulent society of turn-of-the-century Newport. The story of Isabel January - a debutante of wealth, breeding and rare beauty, whose poised smile and cool eyes hide her wild yearnings. It's also the story of Marian Childs - plain, impoverished and without prospects, yet destined to blossom into a woman of style and substance. Two different worlds that become linked through fortune and fate, tragedy and triumph, through two generations of their respective families - and also through the one man who will alter the course of both their lives forever.
