Dr. Charlotte Charlie Stone is one of the countrys most celebrated psychiatrists when it comes to what makes serial killers tick. She was set on this path when, as a teenager, she narrowly escaped being murdered by the serial killer that savagely murdered her friends parents and then kidnapped her friend. Charlie had been unable to do anything to stop it. Her only choice had been to hide and hope she could get help at some point. By the time she did get help, it was too late.

Charlies guilt over not having been able to save her friend had made her determined that she would make it her lifes work to stop as many future serial killers as she can. Now, she maintains an office in a prison that houses plenty of serial killers to serve as subjects for her study. Shes satisfied with her life as it is and wants only to focus on her work.

Then, one day two FBI agents visit her at the prison. It seems that the serial killer responsible for murdering her friend and her friends parents so many years ago may be back and hes killing again. The FBI would like her help in stopping him. Charlie has just turned them down when chaos breaks out in the prison. Michael Garland, the serial killer that she was just interviewing has been stabbed by another prisoner.

Rushing to his aid, she finds that she cant stop the bleeding and he dies while holding onto her wrist.
The thing is that Charlies got a secret that she doesnt share with people. Shes got the ability to see spirits and she watches as Garlands spirit leaves his body. Michael Garland doesnt take his demise very well and realizes pretty quickly that Charlie can see him. Something else about Michael thats worth mentioning is that hes quite the attractive hunk; a fact that Charlie lamented from the first time she ever met him.
Realizing that she must help the FBI if she can, she flies to the North Carolina coastal town where the latest crime has taken place. Even though the crimes are identical to the ones from years ago, shes leaning in the direction of the most current ones being the work of a copycat since the age of the killer would now be rather advanced to be carrying out the physical acts that these murders require. Agent Tony Bartoli, the handsome FBI agent that has been sent to get her, is open to the fact that this may be a copycat but hes not completely convinced.

As Charlie does her best to come up with something to help stop this murderer, she and Agent Bartoli become attracted to each other. Something gets in Charlies way of a possible romance in the form of the ghost of Michael Garland. She finds that no matter what she does, she cant seem to get rid of him. Worst of all, shes starting to wonder if she even wants to be rid of him.

As Charlie gets closer to figuring out who the serial killer is, she comes even closer to putting herself in danger. The serial killer knows shes in the middle of the investigation and he knows who she is from years ago. Soon, hell be coming for her.

Karen Robards has a long list of bestsellers and theres a reason for that. Shes an exceptional storyteller and captures her readers from the first sentence. THE LAST VICTIM is a steamy and scary story. Her characters jump off the page and sit with you as you read. Ms. Robards makes you care about her characters and gets you heavily involved. Warning: This book contains some of the hottest sex scenes youre ever likely to experience anywhere else so have that fan handy to cool down.
