This is a beautiful and touching novel based on the life of Truus Wijsmuller and her heroic efforts to help Jewish children escape from Nazi-occupied countries to the safety of British homes. The young characters in the story capture your heart as they become victims of the pillaging of Jewish assets, imposed rules, arrests and violence. The reader is swept along on their journey as they look for a way out of their predicament. Whether intentional or not, I felt that the book seemed to have a pace much like a train, building slowly, rolling along smoothly until the reader is turning the pages as quickly as possible in a race to the finish. Although there are small news postings throughout the book, this is not a book focused on the history of WWII but rather a very moving and human story that will stay with you long past the closing of the book.
