I hate to admit it but I gave up. I kept slogging through the book in the hopes that it would get better. It didn't though. The writing was good but the story was so slooooowww and there wasn't a single character that I liked (and there were plenty of them to choose from). I just didn't care what happened and who did it. I found myself robotically reading just to find something to pull me in. Wasn't worth it and I finally had to throw in the towel even though I didn't have far to go. Just couldn't do it anymore

This was my first book by this author. It takes place in Wales at an exclusive lake home development called The Shore. There is some resentment between the English and Welsh residents. But Rhys Lloyd and his business partner Jonty invite locals and vacationers alike to the big New Years Eve party. By midnight Rhys is found floating dead in the lake and the murder investigation begins. The tale is told in 2 timelines-the present investigation and past events leading to the fateful night. There is a huge cast of characters and they are all suspects. So many secrets including a whopper of a secret carried by our protagonist, DC Ffion Morgan. As the past events unfold we find Rhys is a pretty horrible man and everyone has a reason to want him dead. It took awhile to get to know the characters (some likeable, some not so much). There are quite a few twists and surprises making it hard to guess the murderer. I enjoyed it and I want to read more of DC Morgan.

On New Year's Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests. His vacation homes on Mirror Lake are a success, and he's generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbors. But by midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake. This is a psychological thriller that shifts from the past to the present. We hear from all the different suspects. Lots of secrets are being kept. The plot was such that kept me reading all the way to the very surprised ending. If you like atmospheric psychological thrillers then you would love this book. I would like to thank Sourcebooks Landmark and NetGalley for a copy for an honest review.
