Really enjoyed this book for the first half, as it focused on the French and German air aces of WWI. Very interesting way to portray the war, and as an aviation buff, I really liked the different view point. However, the second half returns to the foot soldiers, and becomes yet another slogging battle through the woods. (Yes, this is how the war was, but it's also very much the same story told in Shaara's WWII series, and so gets tedious very quickly.) I wasn't able to finish the last few chapters - not enough interesting action for me.

"A gripping account of World War I - from tactics to strategy. Jeff Sharra shows the dominence of the U.S. military in the context of coalition warfare - as relevant today as it was in 1918." Gen Tommy Franks
