A troubling case for Inspector Alleyn. The inspector's son, a budding writer, is spending the summer on a small island not too far from France. He's working on a book. Some old acquaintances of his father, the wealthy Pharamonds, found him a room in the home of a plumber and his family. Ricky Alleyn meets some other colorful characters on the island. A fire and brimstone stable owner and his carefree niece, an unfriendly young painter, the plumber who seems like anything but a plumber and his unhappy wife. Unexpectedly, the stable owner's niece is found dead, apparently the result of a riding accident. But is it an accident? Ricky's letters home have raised some questions in his father's mind. Drug trafficking may be involved. As officials try to find the truth, Ricky's involvement in the case increases until someone attempts to murder him! Inspector Alleyn has already been sent to look into the drug issue and is tapped by the locals to look at the riding death as well. Difficult case to sort out. You won't guess what really happened!
