Harry is on involuntary stress leave and decides to investigate an old case that is personal - his mother's murder. He has no idea that the investigation makes some top politicos in the city nervous; so nervous that they become deadly. Several surprising twists in this book. You'll enjoy it; a deeper look into Harry's personality too.

Excellent as always. This book explains some of Harry Bosch's background. Is it possible for Harry to find his true love? You'll have to read it to find out.

Poor Harry Bosch. A very good story.

Surprisingly good for a series that is usually too violent for my taste - Bosch goes back to find out who killed his mother 30 years before.

This is the 14th Michael Connelly book I've read and it does not disappoint. His character Harry Bosch is beautifully drawn and the book, like his others, is difficult to put down.

I like Harry Bosch. His Mother was murdered when he was a child. He has never been able to deal with this and in this book he does. I think it is my favorite in the series. Very good book.

Michael Connelly is awesome. I get lost in his novels and I never want them to end. I can't say that about any other writer. He makes me want to both be a writer and never write again, all at the same time. I want to be a writer because I think it would be fantastic to make others feel and think the way he makes me feel and think. Then again, he makes me never want to write another word because his work is so perfect, it can never be equalled. I can't possibly do it as well as he does it. It's a contradiction and a result of my own lack of confidence, I know, but it's true. It's what reading Connelly does to me. Another thing I know to be true: as long as Michael Connelly keeps writing, I'll be reading.

From Library Journal
After being put on involuntary stress leave for attacking his boss, LAPD detective Hieronymous "Harry" Bosch tackles the 30-plus-year-old murder case of a Hollywood prostitute?his mother. Bummed out by the failure of his latest romance as well, Harry faces a deeper, psychological crisis: his life's "mission" may end if he solves the case. Harry continues, nonetheless, soon discovering that the police and politically powerful others purposely glossed over his mother's murder. With prose that cuts to the quick, a masterfully interwoven plot, and gripping suspense, Connelly renders a fitting sequel to The Black Echo (LJ 1/92).

I did enjoy the Last coyote. Have been reading
M. Connelly for a long time, but had never read all of his first books. This open a door to Harry Bosch; made me understand so much about him and his childhood and his mother and the life that she lead. A surprise ending. and a good plot. I would recommend this book to all Michael Connelly's fans.

I really liked reading this book...so much so that I have ordered everyone of Michael Connelly's books since then. They remind me of a Clint Eastwood
type of hero and they are very well written.

This is one of the Harry Bosch series of novels and perhaps the best of all of them. Harry is caught up in more issues and problems than anyone can handle including solving a very old murder. A great read!

Harry Bosch's life is on the edge. His earthquake-damaged home has been condemmed. His girlfriend has left him. He's drinking too much. And after attacking his CO, he's had to turn in his L.A.P.D. detective's badge. Now, suspended indefinately pending psyvhiatric evaluation, he's investigating a crime from 1961: the brutal slaying of a prostitute who happened to be his own mother. I purchased this book to read on an airplane and couldn't put it down and am now hooked on this author.

Well it's Michael Connelly and it's Harry Bosch so of course it's good. There's a Black Dahlia/Elmore Leonard aspect to this one which was kinda' interesting. I guess that's not a spoiler since it's listed on the back. Anyhoo, it's a good read.

The thing I adore most about Connelly's Harry Bosch novels, is the 100% TRUE surroundings. For the past 23 years, I have resided in the very neighborhoods in Hollywood and Venice Beach that he writes about in these novels, and it's mind blowing to recognize his real life locations, down to every graffiti covered signpost or alley shortcuts only we locals know about, or the rarely glimpsed coyotes roaming the Hollywood Hills. One of his books took place on the same street I lived on for about a year, and described some ominous old buildings I did not recall at all - I thought he must have made them up for storyline purposes. I was compelled to drive to my old neighborhood and take a look - and of course there they were, exactly as described. Too cool. :)

Harry Bosch is such a flawed, beautiful police character. In this book, he's suspended from the force, living in a house red-tagged folowing the earthquake, and recently without girlfriend. In his time off, he goes around the law to investigate the cold case from 1961 - the murder of his own mother.

Connelly is one of the best mystery writers around today. Articulate, literate, creative, he is for me one of those who are currently holding the gold standard. He can sometimes seem unrelentingly dark, but he's never boring, and never ever stupid.

Plenty of strong subplots surround a central murder mystery. The lead-up is average but the second-half of the book moves quickly and is full of surprises. The murder premise itself is farfetched, but the rest of the side stories hold the novel together.

3.5 stars out of 5

Suspended from the police force after an altercation with his commanding officer, Detective Harry Bosch has a lot of time on his hands. With lots of time to kill, Harry decides to look into a cold case. In 1961 a prostitute was murdered and left in an alley. No one was ever arrested for this crime. Harry wants to get to the bottom of this case since the victim was his mother. As he studies the evidence and the interviews taken by the homicide detectives, Harry sees some big holes in the investigation. Was there a cover up? Is the killer someone she knew?

This is the fourth book in the Harry Bosch series and it's a winner. We get to know more about Harry and what makes him tick. The mystery was solid and there were a couple of red herrings to throw us (and Harry) off track. There was also a surprise in the middle of the book I didn't see coming at all. My rating: 4 Stars.

The Last Coyote by Michael Connelly - 5 stars
Book Description
Harry attacked his commanding officer and is suspended indefinitely, pending a psychiatric evaluation. At first he resists the LAPD shrink, but finally recognizes that something is troubling him and has for a long time. In 1961, when Harry was twelve, his mother, a prostitute, was brutally murdered, and no one has ever been accused of the crime.

With the spare time a suspension brings, Harry opens up the thirty-year-old file on the case and is irresistibly drawn into a past he has always avoided. It's clear that the case was fumbled and the smell of a cover-up is unmistakable. Someone powerful was able to divert justice and Harry vows to uncover the truth. As he relentlessly follows the broken pieces of the case, the stirred interest causes new murders and pushes Harry to the edge of his job... and his life.

My Review
I am really beginning to like Michael Connelly's writing. These books are really starting to grow on me. I love his Harry Bosch character. You can't help feeling for Harry in The Last Coyote as he searches for his mother's killer. I'm glad to see that Jasmine has come into his life and hopefully he can find some happiness with her. This book kept me interested all the way through and the ending was a complete surprise. I'm looking forward to reading the next installment as Michael Connelly always ends his books with making me want some more.
