Wow. I LOVED this. An edge-of-your-seat, absolutely riveting mystery. He is the rare writer whose talent actually progresses with each novel. This intricate mystery is his best work so far - with a heart-wrenching and yet beautiful story. It was truly wonderful. I can't wait to read what he publishes next!

AWESOME book! So very well written. So many twists and turns, a thriller to the very end. This author does emotion like no other. I couldn't put it down. I can't recommend this one enough!!!!

This is a book that keeps you guessing right up to the last pages.. It is a roller coaster to the left and through the cork screws.... It will keep you up at night. Looking for a challenge try this one on.

Fantastic read and totally deserving of the recent Edgar Prize. I've read all of John Hart's books, and this is his best, by far. It had me guessing throughout and I stayed up late last night to finish it. I'm still thinking about it, a sure sign for me of a very enjoyable and thought provoking book. Very highly recommend.

I found this book one that I could not put down. It is rare that I find a book that I need to wake up and read in the middle of the night so I can see what happens next. This is one of those. I guess that I would compare the author to Harlan Coben's style of writing, mystery, murder, love interest....has it all! Totally recommend this book.

This book was so good. I couldn't put it down. Finished it in two days! The characters are really deep and the flow of the book was perfect. The ending was not at all what I had expected. It is a long book but you don't notice that as you are so pulled into the story. You end up rooting for Johnny and praying that he finds the answers he seeks!

This book started out pretty slow for me, to the point where I almost put it down...
SO glad I didnt. It was a great "mystery" that kept me turning the pages and not wanting to put it down. I really felt like I got to know the main characters.

What an amazing read! I read this for my book club and I could not put this book down! Mystery is normally not my genre, but the characters of this book soon grab your heart.
You really don't even have a clue of what really happened until the author reveals it at the very end. Thank you, John Hart for writing such a treasure! If you have not considered putting this on your reading list, you are really missing something. A novel with heart rendering emotions, twist and turns, and adventure that could be a scene in anywhere across the country. "The Last Child" is a must read!

I just can't say enough about this book. It was very hard to put down and I often found myself up late to read more. Very well written, offered lots of emotion, and never failed to surprise you. You think you have it figured out and then Mr. Hart throws you another twist. Probably one of the bests books I've ever read. Highly recommended. This is the first book I've read by this author but I am definitely looking forward to reading more.
I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK. MANY TWIST AND TURNS, AND IT MAKE U GUESS WHO REALLY KILL JOHNNY SISTER. FIRST TIME READING JOHN HART THILLER, HE DID A WONDERFUL JOB ON A STORY OF A YOUNG BOY, GO AROUND LOOKING FOR HIS SISTER KILLER. I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO READ HIS NEXT BOOK.

My copy of the book was 419 pages long. I read all but the last 70 pages in one day. I finally had to go to bed before I could finish it.
One comment that I mentioned to my kids is that I have noticed men write differently than women. Not better or worse but different. This book was such a strong book, very much about being male driven. All the male characters seem driven by their own inner voices. Levi Freemantle is one character that contributes his voices to GOD. Some of the other characters seem to feel that the are driven by cowardice or weakness or failure.
There are 3 main females in the book, the missing twin sister, the mom, and a female cop, who sure seems to be very male in drive. Again driven.
John Hart has more than 2 characters named John in this book. One named Jack, then Gerald. The police officers name is HUNT. Seems like Hart is naming characters after him.
Everything else that has been written in reviews is so true, this was a good book that had twists and turns. It was extremely well written. I also want to add that it was not gruesome or bloody or graphic. I did expect more of that but I am glad it was not there. There are some scene about injuries, but nothing really upsetting. There are several deaths and murders, and still nothing to upsetting.
There is alcohol, drug use by some of the adults, and underage drinking.
I would go on to seek out other books by this author, just because this book was so well done. BTW, his back cover photo he looks like a police officer.

While this book did hold my interest, I thought a few parts of it were a bit confusing. Eventually, towards the end, most of my questions did get cleared up. I found myself feeling a profound sadness for Johnny, the 13 year-old boy searching for his missing sister. At times I just wanted to climb into the book and slap all of the people around him and help him myself! Abuse against children is a strong theme of this book. I finished it several days ago, but am still thinking about Johnny.
