Bang-up adventure novel featuring Doig's usual cast of eccentric characters. A young boy living with his grandmother in Montana is forced to stay with relatives in Wisconsin while his grandmother faces a serious operation and an extended recovery. All the plans are torn asunder and the boy spends a summer to remember with his step uncle crossing the country from bus to bus to bus. A great read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's the story of an 11 yr. old boy who lives on a ranch out West with his grandmother, who is the cook. She has to have an operation, so sends him on the 'Dog Bus' to Wisconsin to spend the summer with her sister. The trip is eventful; things in WI don't work out well, and adventures ensue!
Heartwarming, and at times very funny. I rarely give 5 stars, but can't think of anything negative about this story.

The premise of the Last Bus to Wisdom by Ivan Doig is far-fetched. Yet, Donal's adventures have me smiling throughout. The story has a sweet charm. Somehow, all throughout I believe that things are going to work out. The slow pace of the book keeps the focus solely on the characters. More than Donal's situation, the 1950s time frame, the setting of the West, and the quirky characters become the lasting impression of this book.
