I liked the story well enough, but it felt... unfinished. That's because this book is a Prequel to the book called "The Good Daughter". I can imagine this prequel being an enhancement to the main book, as it introduces a new character called Charlie Quinn, and gives some good insight as to her personality and motivations.

When 15-year-old Florabama Faulkner appeals to lawyer Charlotte Quinn to help her achieve legal emancipation from her guardians, Charlie promises to do everything she can. Flora's grandparents are her guardians. She says they are running through Flora's trust fund and she is afraid there will be nothing left for her to attend college in a few years. Charlie interviews Flora's grandparents and the family who is willing to take her into their home. These discussions make Charlie believe that Flora is hiding some secrets.

This novella is a prequel to Slaughter's new book, The Good Daughter. It introduces Charlie Quinn, a woman who lost her mother to violence at a young age. She sees herself in Flora who was left an orphan when her mother was killed in a wreck.

I thought this novella was outstanding. It's a great introduction to the character of Charlie. It's also a great story which lots of twists and turns. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
