This is my second Sarah Mallory book. The first one I read(Beneath the Major's Scars) was OK, but I'm glad I tried another, because this one was very well done and enjoyable. It takes place mostly in Brussels, before, during and right after the Battle of Waterloo. Yes, that's been done many times before, but I never get tired of that plot!
From what I've seen so far, Sarah Mallory writes somewhat serious minded books. I'd compare her themes and style to Diane Gaston. The hero is of course a military man, but an officer in the artillery which is a little unusual. Colonel Lord Randall starts out sort of stiff-necked and a bit of a grump, but he's an honorable man and a dedicated officer. The heroine is not part of the nobility. She supports herself by running a girls' school. Their relationship was very well developed, from original antagonism, to friendship, to love. I got caught up with these 2 characters, as well as several of Colonel Lord Randall's family members, that I look forward to seeing more of in the rest of this series.
This is the first book of 3, "Brides of Waterloo", with the heroes all part of the same army unit. Each book has a different author. Book 2 is "A Mistress for Major Bartlett" and Book 3 is "A Rose for Major Flint".
