This is a Gothic novel in the best sense! Set in Barcelona, it features half-ruined building interiors strung with spider webs and broken mannequins; frequent torrential downpours and cloudy days; badly lit alleyways; and a constant sense of menace.
I read the four books in this series in order (this is the fourth in sequence), but I believe there's enough background in the book that you could read this as a stand-alone, also.
All the characters are distinctive and well-drawn. If you're like me you'll be sucked into this world of painful mystery and not want to come out.
