Not heeding the advice of the local guide Leonidas Hubbard, the leader of the expedition, soon found himself in trouble, on the wrong route and a harsh winter bearing down on them. The father was an accomplished outdoorsman when he was younger and he is quick to respond to the many errors made by the young American adventurer that caused his tragic end. These two books are lovingly interconnected. Atwoods precise and subtle creation of these scenes between the couple are extremely moving.
