There are three major varieties of Mafia in Italy and America: La Camorra, Cosa Nostra, and'Ndrangheta. Charles Rivers has individual books about each Mafia group. The publisher also has a combined book about the three. This book talks about La Camorra.

The Camorra of Naples seems to be the most violent group; they were generally illiterate. They tended to have short lifespans because of their violence. Amazingly, this group emerged from the weak prison system where the inmates literally ran the prisons. When they got out of jail, they were already organized. The mafia code requires its members to be subtle, submissive, and especially violent.

Reading about the Mafia groups, it is not difficult to understand why so many Italians immigrated to the US during their tumultuous history.
