Lois Duncan is a skilled writer of children's suspense tales and I Know What You Did Last Summer is one of her best or certainly, because of the successful movie and sequal, one of her most famous. I originally read it in the seventies and was thrilled with it and became a fan of Lois Duncan and have since read it in the wake of seeing the movie and the book still holds up in the category of suspense. The lead character is well developed and very strongly written while the supporting characters add nice window dressing to the whole endeavor. People expecting the horror, gore, and death toll of the movie will be dissappointed. This is teen suspense of the old school variety.

I thought this book was excellent. It is about some teenagers who accidently committed a crime last summer but nobody knows that they did it. After that summer the teens are in their senior year of high school split up and try to forget what happened. Then the story mostly takes place the next summer when the teenagers are out of school for good and start getting notes saying "I know what they did last summer" the teens are being framed and need to figure out who knows there secret. Again, a very excellent book.

I loved this book when I read it as a teen; not even the movie could spoil the sense of terror it embues. (And if you've seen the movie but haven't read the book, do yourself a favor - the book is soooo much better!)

Classic Lois Duncan writing. If you've seen the movie, read the book. It's way better. If you haven't seen the movie, read the book. = )

The movie was based on this book. It's a fun young adult book, and a quick read.

Always better than the movie, and always true, IMO.
The story hits far closer to home when we discover that it's a child, not an adult, in the original story that is hit by four marginally inebriated teenagers, which sobers them rather quickly at that point, but it's too late. We meet the little boy's sister after somebody begins sending cards and stalking the unspeaking quartet. As the sister cheerfully smiles, ecstatic at just having company, our hearts break knowing the tragedy that one moment has caused her family. The secret still remains, however, who is stalking the pact-holders? It's a question that kept me on the edge of my seat the first time I read this fourteen years ago. Will it do the same to you?
