Actually it's 2 books - Book 1 is Knight of Ghosts and Shadows, while Book 2 is Summoned to Tourney. This is Ms. Lackey using elves again but in an urban setting (and with plenty of music around naturally). Although I liked Knight well enough, I looked at it as more of a set up for the 2nd book. Of course, Summoned is set in San Francisco (which I visited in April 2005), so it held more of my interest. :-)

But I liked both books well enough that I'm considering buying the paperback at some point and keeping it my book collection.

Eric Banyon, a flautist who plays Renaissance faires and other such venues, discovers that his music has the power to free a young elf from a magical prison. Lots of fun, good summer reading.

A compilation of the first two books in the Bard series, "Knight of Ghosts and Shadows" and "Summoned to Tourney."

Elves in L.A.?? They've found Eric Banyon, a feckless itinerant musician plying his trade at the Southern California Renn Faire. And they think he can save their world.

After he does, indeed, save the world of the Southern California elves, Eric and his newly acquired family hotfoot it north to the Bay Area. This time he gets to save the whole Bay Area.

Really enjoyed this as I do all the Bardic Elves storys. This has a neer do well human freeing an elve. Some trips to their world, Underhill and plenty of magic. Mixing L.A. and Underhill makes for some interesting scenes. Not a great book but fits in with the others like it. Good reading.

Fun idea -- that an itinerant street musician's songs awaken an enchanted elven prince in contemporary Los Angeles -- that gets tangle up in elven and human and wiccan magicks. I liked the notion that certain songs (particularly the Celtic ones) can unlock magic, but had a bit of difficulty with elven horses that could diguise themselves as motorcycles.....
