Plenty of plot twists...he's betrothed to her older sister who loves another and she's betrothed to an old man (the uncle of her sister's love)...honor bound to others yet in love with each other...anyone know the name of the book that is sure to follow about her younger step-sister Sybil? I'd certainly read another Jackie Ivie book.

The only good thing about this book was the cover, and for that reason alone I didn't give it the lowest possible rating.
It just started out too slow for me and didn't get any better from there, probably because of the author's very dry writing style. Granted, she tried to be descriptive, but the words just didn't flow well and at times became overly redundant. The time seemed to pass slowly, story-wise, as well. At least the first 90 pages describe nothing but the boring/awkward interactions between the lead characters in a run-down hovel that got old quickly. It may have gone on longer, but I gave up on the book shortly after when the two began bickering while she was trying to force him to play cat's cradle.
The characters were also hard to get into because they lacked a lot of true emotion depth. Sure, there is a lot of reiteration regarding the abuse that Kendran witness from her father to her mother, but her ranting just lacked the substance to make you empathetic towards the character's pain. The woman does manage to come off exactly as what she's described as early on in the book: a harpy. Most of the time she is described to be screeching, hissing or attempting to yell (despite the fact that she temporarily lost her voice due to an illness) instead of talking in a normal manner. And when she does talk, it's with the language skills of a cockatiel because she doesn't seem to be able to speak in full, intelligible sentences. The guy is just a meathead and a lot of what he says or does just leaves me glaring at the pages while thinking "Gimme a break!".
