This was the first book I've read by Laurell K. Hamilton. After hearing so many good things about her books, I was terribly disapointed and will never read another one. It's all stupid blather. Her writing takes all the magic and excitement out of the paranormal and turns it into a flat boring world. I know I'm in the minority but I had to force myself to finish this book. There are too many good authors out there for me to read anymore of this series or any others.

I love LKH and this book doesn't disappoint. I wasn't sure if I would like this series as much as Anita Blake, but I was wrong. Merry Gentry is just as interesting and entertaining and I can't wait to get to the rest of the books in this series.

I absolutely LOVE Laurell K Hamilton's books. This is a great read for someone just discovering her books. She has a certain style and flair in all the books she writes.

First book of a series. Different take on paranormal with Fairies, trolls and fey magic.
Meredith being second in line to take over the throne left the court to live on her own. Which meant she had to hide so her Aunt Queen Andais couldn't find her and have her brought back to court. For three years she was able to hide nad make a living as a Private Investigator who specialized in supernatural crimes... Til Doyle, the Queen's Chief bodyguard showed up to bring her back to her aunt...
She returns to find that her Aunt Queen Andais wants to get new blood in to the court so it's up to Meredith and the Queens son Cel to produce a child the first to do so will be the one to take the throne.....
The book is a little slow in the first chapter but picks up and moves along with the rest of the book.... As far as erotic sex scenes nothing till the later part of the book and honestly it's mild compared to some other erotic paranormal books I've read. I honestly if asked to rate the book I would give it an R rating I've seen worse in R rated movies....

I came to this series after losing interest in Hamilton's "Anita Blake" series. In the "Meridith Gentry" series Hamilton keeps a good balance between plot (which is sometimes lacking in the latter books of the Blake series) and steamy supernatural sex. A must read!

It took me a bit longer to get into this one than it did when I first read an Anita Blake, but after sticking with it, I found it to be quite enjoyable and an excellent book. It think introducing the characters and the world itself took a bit. It continues to amaze me how Hamilton takes the time to describe things with such vivid detail. I love the imagination that she uses in creating a world completely different, yet still as addictive, as her Anita Blake series. I also like that Meredith is an entity all her own and not another complete clone of Anita.

Meet Meredith Gentry, princess of the high court of Faerie. She poses as a human and has to deal with the queen's assisin. She has a job awaiting her that involves gorgeous men.......not bad to be her. A great book. Love Ms. Hamilton.

This is the first book by Ms. Hamilton that I have read. I liked this book's elaborate world with the fey living openly in America and subject to the tabloids. I also liked that she had 2 royal courts of sidhe and so many kinds of fey, goblins, brownies, etc. The intricate politics were also interesting.
But, and this is a big one, everything came down to sex. The book would be at least a third shorter, if the sex scenes were left out. And the whole plot seems to be geared to forcing our heroine into having sex with a large assortment of beautiful sidhe.
I am so tired of sex scenes. They dont turn me on; they bore me. Im not shocked. I dont disapprove or think they are wicked. If that is what someone wants to read, fine. But why does EVERY book in romance / fantasy/ sf, that is targeted to women, have to have long explicit sex scenes? I do wish some books would go back to: they kiss passionately, the world spins, cut to next morning. Leaving more to my imagination is actually sexier to me.

This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in the faerie sort of life. I first began with Laurell K Hamitlon's other books featuring Anita Blake(another reccommended read). She has a fantastic way of bringing the story to life, wraping it around you, drawing you into the lives of these charachters. A faerie spell perhaps?
As soon as I finished this first book, I ran out to the store as soon as I could(unfortunately no 24 hour bookstores around) and purchased the next two in the series. I'm completely hooked.
This first book brings you into the life of Merideth Gentry, a princess of the High Court of Faerie, the Unseelie court- who can find pleasure in the darker side of nature. She is in hiding in Los Angeles, after too many attempts on her life at Court.
Just a brilliant story introducing her to us, and to the world of the Fae. Political overtones, Merideth's coming of age(so to speak) and power.
I fell in love from the beginning.

Not as engaging as the Anita Blake series by this author, but I enjoyed it. First in the series, and leaves many unanswered questions. A stand-alone book, but very obviously intended as the lead-in for the series, as it simply lays the foundation for the next book.

I can't decided if I like the way Hamilton just throws the reader into the story without explaining specific terms she uses for the magic element. I like the story and the characters are great.. but I think a little more explanation would have been nice. Regardless, I can't wait to begin the second book in this series!
The first in the Merry Gentry series. A red-haired, "later book" Anita set among the Sidhe. Merry is literally a fairy princess in hiding from the Court. She has been found, and must now navigate a safe path between what she wants and what the Court demands.

Since I'm wild about the Anita Blake series, I expected to love this one too. Unfortunately, A Kiss of Shadows fell flat, and Meredith seems too much like a simple variation of Anita. One of LKH's appeals is her ability to create wonderful male characters that you fall in love with, and this doesn't happen here. After reading this, I decided to stick with Anita Blake.

Reading this books was a challenge...the in depth detail, the establishment of the fey world, the detailed descriptions of the different types of fey, the politics, the character development...literally, everything that could be written in detailed descriptions was. Then...there were the unpronounceable names. Ugh!
There was a bit of action/mystery/intrigue to get the book going. Later, there were murder attempts. The heroine survived to fight another day.
I'm glad I finished the first, but it the second is so a labor to read...I'll not continue with the series.

This one wasn't even as good as the first few books from the Anita Blake series. The first book was a bit mis-leading. You think that it's a mystery (similar to Anita Blake) but it turns into porn pretty fast. Some people like reading about sex, but I'm not one of them. To each their own.
If you like the later books in the Anita Blake series chances are you'll probably enjoy A Kiss of Shadows which is written by the same author but deals with faeries, goblins and other creatures instead of vampires and shapeshifters.
This is where it all begins. If you read this book and don't immediately go out and get the second in the series, you're not human! A mix of horror, seduction, romance and fantasy. I could not put it down. Thus began my love affair with Laurell K Hamilton books. A must read.

This was my first LKH book. It was 2003, and because of the movies, I had just read the Lord of the Rings(LOTR). As usual, after a LOTR reading, I long for more of Middle Earth. It was just chance that I ran across this book in the library, and thought "Wow, I'd like to read about elves. I love mysteries too." I hadn't yet heard the term "paranormal or urban fantasy".
Well, it wasn't like Middle Earth, and it's not much of a mystery either...
At first, I was thinking, "What? The mystery is solved within the first 40 pages, and now it's become soft core porn." But then I realized I was enjoying myself, and i was turning pages just to see which gorgeous man she'd sleep with next.
I'm not a romance reader, and that is so not my thing. So, I give LKH credit for building that kind of suspense for me. I'd never seen anything like her elves, or female characters with male harems.
Normally, I just skip over sex scenes. But, magic occurs during LKH's sex scenes, and people glow like light bulbs. That was so unusual. It kept me reading, at least for the first 20 sex scenes (had to read 3 books to get up to 20). Now, i just skim the sex scenes in case interesting magic occurs.
In LKH's books, good sex will solve a lot of problems. I know that this annoys some readers, but it appeals to the optimist in me.
I don't know what to make of LKH. I have never been both so bored and so engaged, all within the same book. The sex and relationship-discussions never end.
However, some aspects of her characters are so incredibly real, especially how she dealt with inter-personal power during her early books. It felt so good to read a realistic account of women who didn't make nice, and who demanded to call the shots.

This character is a duplicate of the Anita Blake character. However, I really liked the first Anita Blake books. So, I don't really mind. I was very interested. Good stuff
Vivid. Good easy read. Not traditional romance. Definitely intrigued enough to get the next in line.
It was a good story, too much erotica for my tastes though. I thought it was going to be a mystery, and I suppose it was but the mystery was a very, very minor subplot.

Three years ago, Princess Meredith fled the court of her cruel Aunt Andais, the Queen of Air and Darkness, leaving that garden of decadent delights and backstabbing intrigues for the comparative calm of Los Angeles. Using her magic to pass for human, Meredith began a new life as a private investigator specializing in supernatural crime. But now Doyle, the Queen's chief bodyguard and assassin, has been dispatched to fetch her back--whether she likes it or not. The product of a marriage designed to cement peace between the rival Seelie and Unseelie courts, Meredith has always been scorned by both factions in spite of her royal blood. But that blood is behind the Unseelie Queen's surprisingly urgent summons. For ever since the fey's exile from Europe to America, their power and purity have been fading. Desperate to renew her race, Queen Andais now pins her hopes on a contest between Meredith and her own son, the sadistic Prince Cel. The first to produce a child will win the throne. The loser's reward will be death . . .

A book worth rereading
A great read; one of the better ones in the "Meredith Gentry" series
It was an okay book written by an okay author. Merry is Anita Blake, there is no difference really between the two; They even have the same dialog. The supporting characters are the same but with different names. The only real difference I see is that over sexualization of characters within this series starts right away, where as the Anita Blake series takes awhile. I ejoyed the first 5 or so books in the Anita Blake series, but not the rest. I understand that there are people who like her soft porn, but if you only liked the first batch of books from Anita Blake you will not like this series. Laurell Hamilton needs a new personal fantasy to write about.
It was ok. A good start to the series, but I lost interest as I read the second and third (which I didn't finish).
Hardcover book which I replaced with a paperback. It's a great read. I believe this is the first in the series. If I may suggest: buy them all and read one right after the other. Makes for a better read.
A very grown up existance of fair tales as we know them. Meridth Brooks seems to be a normal every day dective @ an agency that specializes in the demon fey existance(you may have an oger for a next door neighbor) Buy she's really a fairy princess hiding from her evil sadistic auntie, The Queen of the Darkness...

This book was quite different from the Anita Blake Book. Their is a lot of intrigue and very little fighting. I like this book a lot, but am puzzled as to why these books are so much shorter than the Anita Blake series. Still I find that I'm hooked and since I've finished all the books in the Anita series I'm now moving onto this new series of Laurell Hamilton and so far I can say that I'm not disappointed. I love her writing style and I love how her books are fast paced.
Their are many places to find a summary about this book so I'll give a quick snip-it.
This book is about Meredith NicEssus,Princes of the high court and niece to the Quine of Air and Darkness.
She has lived for three years hidden from all who know her. She has lived and worked in LA until a job exposed her for who she was. Now she escorted back to court by the Queen's Royal Guard and even before she arrives her life has been threatened over and over again. Many want her dead, but none more than her cousin, Son of the Queen. The Queen has no love for her and has even tried to kill her when she was but a child. She would kill her now except that she wants something from her, and what the Queen wants is what the Queen get...... In the mean time is all a matter or survival.

Great Story
Laurell K. Hamilton revitalized vampires, werewolves, and zombies in the popular Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter books. In this new series, she updates faeries. A Kiss of Shadows introduces Merry Gentry, a.k.a. Meredith NicEssus, a faerie princess of the Unseelie Court, where politics is a blood sport. Merry, who's part sidhe (elvish), part brownie, and part human, never really fit in. She's short, not skilled in offensive magic, and mortal because of her human blood. These are real liabilities when your family, especially aunt Andais, Queen of Air and Darkness, is out to kill you. Merry has been in hiding for three years, living in Los Angeles and working for the Grey Detective Agency, which specializes in "supernatural problems, magical solutions." A new case sets her against a man who uses forbidden magic to seduce fey women and drain their power. A plan to trap him goes awry and Merry's cover is blown. Now Andais knows where she is. But things have changed in Andais's court, and Merry is changing too.
