Alice Perrers was mistress to King Edward III. By some "historians" she was a wanton harlot who seduced a king but the author didn't believe that this scenario was plausible. This novel with Alice as the central character is depicted as a woman who was caught in court politics. Her father was a merchant who betroths Alice to a merchant whose ties to the royal family enmesh her into a world in which she never wanted to live. Campion draws a remarkable character with whom the reader comes to identify quickly. Yes, I liked the novel very much.
