In the era of Henry II, justice is often the result of chance and is unequally applied. The King decides to address this and appoints teams of judges to tour the kingdom and hear a variety of complaints, from issues of inheritance to murder. Aelred Barling is one of the King's clerks and in an unusual turn of events, gets dispatched to investigate a murder, along with his assistant, Hugo Stanton. The Lord of the town is certain that the killer has already been caught and is determined to see him hanged. Barling is just as determined to see the King's Law applied fairly. As they conduct their investigation, a picture emerges which seems to say that the initial suspect may, in fact, be innocent. It is when a second murder occurs and then a third, that Barling and Stanton suspect that the town has some deeply held secrets which hide the truth.

"The King's Justice" by E. M. Powell introduces readers to Aelred Barling and Hugo Stanton, employed by King Henry II to administer England's laws. Powell is already an accomplished author with her Fifth Knight series and the Stanton and Barling mysteries are as creative an investigative duo as any other in the mystery genre. The series is set in medieval England and shows promise as series worth reading. I thoroughly enjoyed this inaugural entry and plan add Powell's other series to my already insurmountable to-be-read pile. This book gets a well-deserved 4/5 stars from me.

A mystery series that got its start from a character in 'The Fifth Knight' trilogy. Powell does a good job creating characters you want to get to know better. The King's Court had just returned and it would be another year before they set off to dispense 'The King's Justice' until a brutal murder in a nearby village requires attention. A clerk and his assistant are dispatched to address what seems a straightforward case until another murder happens. It keeps ya guessing and engaged to the final pages.
