We're back in Du Maurier's beloved Cornwall; this one in mid-seventeenth century at the time of Cromwell's uprising against the king. Although the title character is the main Royalist general in the western county, the novel centers on his once betrothed (the narrator) and the war as it affected the non-combatant population. In this way it reminds me of Ibañez's The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, although there is little of the battles in this: merely what one might dub news blurbs and local gossip. Of course, Du Maurier is again at her best with the repartee between her narrator and the myriad characters in the novel as well as her development of her characters, particularly that of the narrator.
