Interesting idea for a series... enjoyable, but the main character needs to be slapped around a bit from time to time (fortunately, he is..)
Sheri S. Tepper's first fantasy novel. Peter is a teenager at Schooltown, learning to play the True Game. The Talented go to this School for many years, waiting as their Talent emerges and they learn the complex and rigid rules of the Game - which is basically a way to wage war. Peter is betrayed by someone he loves and from that moment is on the run with a couple companions, helped on their way by the King of the school. But Peter has a bigger destiny ahead, although he isn't too happy once he encounters it.
Nice world-building by Tepper, all the characters are interesting, and she doesn't skimp on the ugliness of the Game to focus on how cool it would be to have Talent. She drops some fun hints about what the Game is really and the ancient history of this world.
