Gilliam Bradshaw's Arthurian trilogy is a tale woven around Gwalchmai, nephew to King Arthur and more commonly known as Gawain. Books included in this trilogy are "Hawk of May," "Kingdom of Summer" and "In Winter's Shadow."

Published in 1980 and undeservedly out of print, this is one of the finest retellings of the Arthurian Cycle since the days of T.H. White's "The Once and Future King.

I loved this entire Arthurian trilogy. The prose is beautiful, and there is enough adventure, history, and romance, and history to satisfy any reader and especially lovers of the Arthurian legend.

The first book "Hawk of May" focuses on Sir Gawalchmai (Sir Gawain) in his youth and as he meets up and joins with Arthur Many of the usual characters come to life in this story as well. "Kingdom of Summer", the second book, focuses on his search for Elidan, the lady he loves. There is also a confrontation with his mother, an evil sorceress. The last book, In Winter's Shadow, is told from Gwynhwyfar's (Guinevere) perspective. I found it very compelling.

The entire trilogy is a refreshingly new version of an old tale, highly recommended.
