The Kingdom by the Sea : A Journey Around the Coast of Great Britain
The Kingdom by the Sea A Journey Around the Coast of Great Britain
Author: Paul Theroux
It was 1982, the summer of the Falkland Islands War, and the birth of the royal heir, Prince William -- and the ideal time, Theroux found, to surprise the British into talking about themselves. The result is a candid, funny, perceptive, and opinionated travelogue of his journey and his findings.

Theroux being Theroux there is a bit too much of himself in this book. Why does he need to go on about the bookseller recognising his face? (Probably because he was posing in front of the copies of his books would be my guess). Nonetheless, he delivers a brilliant approach to a British travelogue by choosing to walk around the shoreline of the island during the Falkland crisis. British blurb said the book was 'best avoided by patriots with high blood pressure' and I suppose he does hit some sacred cows but Theroux is quite insightful and even his ego doesn't outstage his awe for the landscape and characters in it.
