From the back cover:
At 16 Kenn dropped out of high school and hit the road, hitching back and forth across the US to Alaska, Flordia and Mexico. His goal was to set a record for the most birds seen in one year. Along the way, what started as a game became a quest for understanding the nature of the world. Very compelling

Very interesting and fun tale of Kenn Kaufman's travels in the early '70's. It would be best to read this book with an atlas and a bird book beside you.
